Este libro ofrece una exploración crítica y multidimensional de la relación entre biología, salud y cultura, desplegando un recorrido que va desde los fundamentos teóricos de la antropología médica hasta los debates contemporáneos so-bre biopolítica, globalización, género, ecología, psicologiza-ción de la vida y envejecimiento. Mediante un enfoque que articula perspectivas illness y sickness, análisis interpretativo-fenomenológico y reflexiones estructurales, revela cómo las prácticas médicas, los discursos expertos y las políticas sanitarias configuran experiencias individuales y colectivas de enfermedad, bienestar y sufrimiento.
A lo largo de sus páginas, se examinan los procesos de medicalización y psiquiatrización, así como la expansión de tecnologías biomédicas, identificándolos como instrumentos de control social y regulación biopolítica, mientras se ponen de relieve las formas de resistencia, agencia y negociación desplegadas por los sujetos en distintos contextos culturales. Desde los partos y la crianza hasta la vejez y la salud mental, el texto integra estudios etnográficos clásicos y contemporáneos, evidenciando cómo cosmovisiones, rituales, narrativas y políticas configuran la construcción social de la enfermedad, el envejecimiento y la subjetividad, y cómo es-tas prácticas pueden reproducir desigualdades, estigmas y jerarquías de poder.
