Ahmed Essop was born in 1931 to a Muslim family in Gujarat and moved to South Africa in 1934. In 1986, he began to devote himself exclusively to literature. Since then, his work has reflected the lives of a diverse group of beloved South Africans of Indian origin and their relationships within and outside their racial and religious communities.
