Synopsis

MEDITATION, WELL-BEING, AND HEALTH. CONTRIBUTIONS OF CONTEMPLATIVE NEUROSCIENCE TO MENTAL BALANCE AND SELF-KNOWLEDGE

Meditation, a practice linked to spirituality since time immemorial and adapted to the Western world, has come to play a role in its practitioners' self-knowledge, self-control, and mental balance, important factors in today's world. Studies conducted on mindfulness meditation have demonstrated this brain capacity called neuroplasticity, which makes it possible to preserve important areas of the cerebral cortex, such as the hippocampus, delaying brain aging. Research has recorded favorable genetic and epigenetic effects that contribute to better physical and mental health. This practice has shown benefits for physical and mental conditions, with a reduction in medication and a consequent reduction in healthcare costs. With all these advantages, meditation can contribute to a better world.
