INNOVATION FOR THE INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF HERITAGE, LANDSCAPE AND TOURISM

The pace and nature of current urbanization processes are challenging the way we design and teach planning, architecture, and history. The world is undergoing a period of extreme transitions affecting people's daily lives, driven largely by inequalities caused by globalization and climate change. This fluctuating condition seems undeniable when we examine the extreme variations in climate and their impact on landscapes and human settlements. Historical research, architectural design, and territorial planning have a crucial role to play in managing this state of flux and, given the scale and complexity of their impact on the territory, require the development of advanced digital tools capable of addressing such challenges. Given this vast panorama, the Smart Architectural and Archeological Heritage (SMARCH) project focuses on planning, historical research, and architectural design for sites of special heritage value, such as large archaeological sites, which hold important keys to understanding the physical and environmental context of human action on the territory. An understanding of these complexes as landscapes allows us to approach research and projects related to them in a transversal and multidisciplinary manner. The study of the integration of tangible and intangible culture on the territory in the social processes of reality construction therefore calls upon disciplines such as geography, ecology, archaeology, ethnology, and sociology, but also architecture and urban planning.
