ROYAL PATRONAGE IN THE HIEROME MONASTERIES OF THE CROWN OF CASTILE
Keywords:
monasteries;, Jeronimos;, crown of Castile;Synopsis
The Hieronymite monasteries contained many works of art that, treasured for years, are today an important source for analyzing artistic movements, their interests, and the thinking of both the religious and the general public. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the Order of Saint Jerome experienced a surge in foundations and prestige: this study addresses the close relationship between the monarchy and the order, focusing on the architectural and heritage history of the male monasteries in the Crown of Castile. Added to this is the protection of the elites, a powerful nobility associated with the monarchs, and a considerable number of religious figures who contributed in different ways to the prestige of the Hieronymites and left a significant cultural mark.
