Synopsis

This book, the first monographic work by writer and journalist Cecilia G. de Guilarte, seeks to highlight the crucial importance of women in her literary production during her period of exile in Mexico through an approach to the discourse of the female characters in her work. In her writings, Cecilia G. de Guilarte transforms women into the subject of discourse, as they actively participate in the search for and reconstruction of their identity. As a result, their decisions and courage are vital to achieving their goals. In this way, the writer offers a courageous perspective on reality and simultaneously reflects on her own identity, transforming her experience of exile into literature. Throughout Cecilia G. de Guilarte's literary work, the dignity, identity, and courage of the most marginalized social classes are also affirmed. These women are victims of a discourse of power to which they cannot adapt. Thus, a parallel is established between the discourse of gender oppression and the discourse of class-based social oppression. Cecilia G. de Guilarte undoubtedly succeeds in exorcising a part of her past by transferring her own experiences to an imaginary world in which many of the events that mark her own biography are recognized.
