Keywords:
The Weapons of Beauty, Calderón de la Barca, 1600 -1681, women's freedom, critical editionSynopsis
The Weapons of Beauty, a nearly forgotten comedy by Calderón de la Barca (1600-1681), stands out not only for its undeniable poetic and dramatic quality, but also because it reveals a little-known facet of this Baroque genius's thought: his resolute defense of women's freedom. The Weapons of Beauty thus transcends the historical context of Spain's Golden Age to emerge as a work of absolute relevance, addressing themes such as individual freedom, the senselessness of war, and the importance of physical appearance that undoubtedly continue to appeal to the emotions and reflections of theatergoers today. To ensure full enjoyment of the text, we offer a carefully curated critical edition of The Weapons of Beauty, which attempts to faithfully approach Calderón's original creation. It is accompanied by exhaustive notes that will help readers resolve any linguistic and cultural concerns. The edition is also complemented by a careful introductory study that elucidates some of the most distinctive aspects of this work, such as its creative process and the role played by the character of the graceful man. With all this, we seek to contribute to The Weapons of Beauty being read, appreciated, and enjoyed again, and perhaps soon, performed again on stage.
