Keywords:
castilian credit, Valladolid, 1862-1889Synopsis
This work reconstructs the history of Crédito Castellano, a banking and public works company, from its founding in Valladolid in 1862 until its final liquidation in 1889, after being declared bankrupt in 1865, within the context of the economic history of Spain and Valladolid. Particular attention is paid to the role played by local elites and their relationships with other credit institutions in Valladolid at the time, such as the Banco de Valladolid, which also eventually went bankrupt or dissolved, as well as with the Isabel II Railway Company and its successors on the Alar-Santander line, which had a decisive impact on its insolvency and liquidation.
