Synopsis

Despite the Catholicism of the vast majority of Spaniards, the 19th century was not free from conflicts centered on religion, with contrasting positions emerging around binomials such as tolerance-intolerance, religious freedom-Catholic monopoly, clericalism-secularism, and Catholic confessionality-separation of Church and State. This conflict, at certain times, translated into lively dialectical clashes or gave rise to decidedly violent expressions of one kind or another. Political parties, opinion bodies, the clergy itself, and intellectuals all adopted opposing positions on these issues. This book, compiled in response to the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of religious freedom in Spain (1869), is part of this complex of problems.
