Keywords:
Diego García de Campos, Juan de Soria, Middle Ages, medieval history and literature, CastileSynopsis
This essay explores the life and work of two distinguished Castilian writers of the 13th century: Diego García de Campos and Juan de Soria. The former was chancellor of Alfonso VIII and author of a highly original work entitled Planeta. The latter was also an illustrious personality at the court of Alfonso VIII, chancellor of Fernando III and bishop of Osma and Burgos, author of the Crónica latina de los reyes de Castilla, considered the most original and reliable of the Latin chronicles of the Middle Ages. Apart from the primary objective, the essay also proposes, as a secondary purpose, to make available to the reader not specialized in medieval Latin literature or in the history of the reigns of Alfonso VIII, Berenguela and Fernando III of Castile, a series of texts in Castilian, extracted from both authors, so that those interested in medieval history and literature can get an idea of what was written in the wake of the Castilian culture.
