Through the analysis of the original -and in many cases unpublished- documentation generated by the engineers in the second half of the sixteenth century, Alicia Cámara has been able to elaborate the work that we publish below, in which the author articulates her text around “the need of knowledge for the exercise of power”, which ultimately is an explanation of the relationship that Philip II maintained with his engineers. This book, Grandeza de poder y saber. Felipe II and his engineers, is the result of the conference “Greatness of power and knowledge. Felipe II y sus ingenieros, and the seminar Arquitectura política y militar en las ciudades de la monarquía de Felipe II that Prof. Alicia Cámara Muñoz gave on November 18 and 19, 2021 at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the UVA, as holder of the Philip II Chair in its LII edition, the oldest Chair that exists at the University of Valladolid, whose Director is since 2008 Prof. Alberto Marcos Martín, Professor of Modern History at the UVA.
