WOMEN TRANSLATORS, WOMEN FIGHTERS. THE SHADOW CAREER OF MARÍA ANTONIA GUTIÉRREZ BUENO Y AHOIZ (1781-1874). VERTERE COLLECTION, 25 (2023)

María Antonia Gutiérrez Bueno y Ahoiz (1781-1874) was a scientific translator and a female biographer, little known to this day. This monograph aims to recover the historical memory of the translator and consists of two parts: the first focuses on women's historiography and aims to reconstruct the translator's biography, as well as an inventory of her works. The second, based on the history of translation and translatology, is based on the study and analysis of her scientific translations. As a translator, one of her intentions was to contribute to the transmission of the latest French advances on the cholera-morbus epidemic in Spain, translating into Spanish and under a pseudonym a compilation of French medical news in 1832. As a female biographer, she began to publish in 1835 her work entitled Diccionario histórico y biográfico de mugeres [sic] célebres [sic], the writing of which led her to apply for admission to the Biblioteca Nacional de España, becoming the first user to obtain the right of access in 1837. María Antonia Gutiérrez Bueno y Ahoiz has passed through history without leaving her name on paper. Through this research we aim to give her the place she deserves in translation and gender studies. Sandra Pérez-Ramos holds a PhD in Translation, Gender and Cultural Studies from the University of Vic-Central University of Catalonia and a PhD in Iberian and Ibero-American Studies from the University of Perpignan Via Domita (France). She is currently a lecturer and researcher at the University of Caen (France) and is a member of the ERLIS research team (UR 4254) at the same institution, as well as the LER research group (EA 4385) at the University of Paris VIII Vincennes-Saint-Denis. Her research focuses on the recovery of the historical memory of women translators, the linguistic and translatological analysis of translations and the analysis of anthropocentric discourse in the scientific and women's press.
