BETWEEN LOVE AND HEARTBREAK. SCENARIOS OF EXEMPLARITY AND TRANSGRESSION IN VALLADOLID (15TH TO 16TH CENTURIES)
Keywords:
courtly love, prostitution, civil architecture, urban planning, nobilitySynopsis
The extensive information provided by a documentary source on the sexual practices of a noblewoman during the reign of Henry IV in Valladolid has allowed us to delve into aspects rarely addressed due to the usual paucity of documentation.
The exceptional nature of this case warranted the intervention of various specialists to address the topic from diverse perspectives. The attitudes of Aldonza de Zúñiga, the name of the protagonist of this story, and those around her, as well as the social implications of her behavior, are analyzed by Ortega Baún and Vasallo Toranzo. The feelings her behavior aroused and the values that sustained it, as well as the couplets they generated, are analyzed by Beltran Pepió. Meanwhile, the setting where Aldonza's life unfolded in Valladolid—the Plaza de San Pablo—is detailed by Vasallo. Alongside this, Martín Romera delved into the existence of other cases on the margins of love in Valladolid around 1500, with some thought-provoking notes on the support provided between women at the time; while Ramiro Ramírez analyzed the role played by Leonor de Castro in her attempt to preserve the house of the Counts of Ribadavia, the residence that had belonged to our protagonist.
