Understanding between human beings and universal knowledge have been mediated through translation since the beginning of time. Without it, we would remain in silos, ignorant of each other. Vehicular languages have changed over the centuries, as have the media used to transmit this knowledge. The creation of the printing press brought with it an explosion of publications that traveled throughout Europe, initially written in Latin—as is well known—and, in a second phase, Romance languages gradually claimed their place. In the 18th century, French replaced Latin in the dissemination of scientific and technical texts and, consequently, became the main source language for translations published in Spain. To treatises, manuals, dictionaries, and so on, already established as publishing formats, magazines were timidly added at the end of the century. These were the major players of the 19th century, both in the general press (newspapers) and in the specialized press. Scientific developments had a great impact thanks to these journals, especially specialized ones, for various reasons. They included bibliographies and translations, on the one hand, and expanded the number of readers with access to information. The volume we present represents a significant sample of the important role played by the press in the transmission of knowledge. The articles in it offer a wide range of representative studies on terminology, medicine, economics, basic scientific dissemination for the uninitiated, and more.
