Synopsis

The Els Trocs cave is already well known in the scientific bibliography through a large number of publications, both general on the excavation and registration process (Rojo-Guerra et al. 2013, 2014, 2015, 2020) and specific on certain novel and interesting aspects such as evidence of violence in anthropological remains (Alt et al. 2020), the scientific verification of the first transhumance through archaeobiological analysis of faunal and paleoparasitological remains (Tejedor-Rodríguez et al. 2021; Hoffman et al. 2017; Tornero-Dacasa et al. 2018), the exploitation of environmental resources from the analysis of phytoliths and sediment micromorphology (Uría-Blanco 2013; Lancelotti et al. 2014; Mazzuco et al.), etc.

In this book, we focus on the analysis and detailed study of the vast ceramic collection recovered throughout the first six excavation campaigns and the Neolithic UUEE from the 2016 campaign, which amounted to a staggering 54,600 fragments (Section 3.2.1). This is, therefore, what we can consider the most spectacular Early Neolithic ceramic collection in the Iberian Peninsula from a single site. After careful analysis, we intend to incorporate it into the debate on Neolithization and the Early Neolithic at a historical and anthropological level. We will attempt to uncover, or at least address, the relationships between different groups/communities or sets of contexts with distinct characteristics in their ceramic collections, especially with regard to decorative techniques, in order to gain insight into the different forms of savoir-faire or to glimpse deeper socioeconomic and cultural differences.

This is an eminently technical reference book for specialists in the study of pottery from the early Neolithic communities of the Iberian Peninsula (Chapter 3), but it also presents the authors' perspectives on various aspects of the Neolithization process in Western Europe in general (Section 3.6 and Chapter 4).

Likewise, a wealth of scientific and educational resources are offered to make this book attractive to the general public. In addition to the data and figures presented in these pages, the QR code in Figure 1.3 allows you to view or download an appendix containing the individual data sheets for the 269 vessels defined in TROCS. These data sheets are accompanied by a significant number of general and detailed photographs of the different technological, typological, and decorative aspects of the vessels. In addition, many of them have included new QR codes that link to their respective 3D models, collected in an easily accessible digital repository. Therefore, throughout this monograph, references will be made to specific data or figures for some containers, which should be consulted at the following links.
