MASCULINITIES, VIOLENCE, AND EQUALITY. MEN'S SELF-CONTROL AS A STRATEGY FOR SOCIAL POWER
Keywords:
violence and equality, masculinitiesSynopsis
After a century characterized by women's struggle and social advancement toward social and political equality, men continue to develop multiple strategies that reproduce a position of social privilege. The media's overvaluation of achievements has generated a mirage of equality under which Western patriarchies, structured by the neoliberal economic model, are redefined through systems of social representation and the creation of desire. In this context, seemingly new models of masculinity emerge, perpetuating male complicity as a structure of subordination and discrimination against women. This book delves into the patriarchal genealogy of contemporary models of masculinity with the aim of analyzing the responsibility men bear in the social problems caused by gender inequality and androcentric culture: violence against women, prostitution, and trafficking for sexual exploitation... and, ultimately, the ecological crisis generated by an economic and techno-scientific model structured by the instrumental masculinist logic of domination over Nature. Iván Sambade Baquerín holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Valladolid and is a professor of Moral and Political Philosophy at the same university. He has also been an associate member of the Chair of Gender Studies (CEG) at this university since 2008. His research has focused on the relationships between hegemonic patriarchal masculinity and social structures of sex-gender inequality. From this global framework, he has analyzed the social construction of men's subjectivity, based on the various social practices of discrimination against women in which men are socialized. He has participated in numerous research projects, including the R&D project: Gender Equality in the Culture of Sustainability: Values and Good Practices for Solidarity-Based Development (2010-2013), directed by Dr. Alicia Puleo. He has also dedicated much of his teaching work to the study of the relationships between masculinity, violence, and gender inequality. In this regard, he coordinated the course Gender Violence as a Social Problem in the Master's Degree in Gender Studies and Equality Policies at the University of Valladolid for four years, from 2008-09 to 2011-2012. Currently, he is a visiting professor on Gender Theory and Masculinity Studies in postgraduate and master's degrees at various universities, such as the National University of Distance Education, the University of La Rioja and the University of Valladolid itself.
