PETRI COMPOSTELLANI DE CONSOLATIONI RATIONIS / PEDRO COMPOSTELLANI, THE CONSOLATION OF REASON
Keywords:
Pedro Compostelano, the consolation of reasonSynopsis
The text presented here is the first critical edition of a philosophical-theological work, of a disputed author and peculiar character: it is a prosimetrum that follows the path initiated by Boethius (5th-6th century) in his transcendental work De consolatione Philosophiae, by alternating verse and prose. It is set in the flourishing period of the archbishop of Santiago de Compostela Berenguel de Landoria during the first part of the 14th century. In this sense, the excellence of this treatise for its time is claimed both for its intense content, full of reminiscences of classical and medieval sources, and for its literary stature, presenting a pedagogical dialogue between Reason and the Compostellan himself, using many of the resources that the rhetoric of the classics made available to him.
