This work sets out the foundations and bases of the recognition, validation, and accreditation procedure for non-formal and informal education. It describes lifelong learning from an educational, occupational, personal, and social perspective. This work highlights the importance of lifelong learning by describing the impact that acquiring the skills necessary to function satisfactorily in present and future society has on today's society. For a better understanding of the content, the reference frameworks for vocational training in Europe and their adaptation to the National System of Qualifications and Vocational Training have been described. A historical and regulatory overview of the validation of non-formal and informal learning is provided, describing the first experiences, the European guidelines that support it, and how it is implemented in Spain.
