VERTERE, 21 (2019). LITERARY TRANSLATION AT THE END OF THE 20TH AND EARLY 21ST CENTURIES: TOWARDS THE DISSOLUTION OF BORDERS

By selecting and publishing thirteen studies in this monograph, all of which share the common denominator of literary translation, we aim to contribute to the current debate on the inevitable sociological aspect of translation studies. In other words, the sociological implications and objectives of translation as an instrument in the hands of societies and their ongoing processes of change. Due to its transformative capacity in areas ranging from the cultural and aesthetic to the institutional and even the linguistic, translation, both practical and theoretical, has recently developed the so-called sociological turn, inspired by the previously revolutionary cultural turn, which plays a central role in the most recent and topical research. This is demonstrated in the chapters comprising this monograph. The book is divided into four thematic sections: sociohistorical studies, identity concerns and the hybridization characteristic of contemporary cross-border or postcolonial societies, poetic translation, and the practice of self-translation in contexts marked by diglossia. This section provides an overview of the direction in which translation studies are progressing in the literary field, with an added sociological focus. The portrait drawn by the various contributions points to the dissolution of boundaries between languages, identities, and literary genres, while the work as a whole questions traditional approaches to translation, thereby opening, but not closing, new horizons of research. INGRID CÁCERES WÜRSIGURA is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Modern Philology at the University of Alcalá. She holds a PhD in German Philology (Complutense University of Madrid) and a Master's degree in Translation (University of Cantabria). Her research focuses on the history of translation and on cultural relations between Spain and German-speaking countries. She has published numerous works in both fields, including prestigious publishing houses and international journals (Interpreting, META, Lebende Sprachen). She is a member of the research groups Fitispos, Otras Lenguas (OLE-5), and Reception. Her recent publications include "Germanophilia and National Catholicism: Contradictions in the Francoist Reception of Stefan Zweig (1939–1947)" (Revista de Filología Alemana, 2018); "Interpreters in History: A Reflection on the Question of Loyalty" (Multilingual Matters, 2017); and with Remedios Solano Rodríguez: "Poetry on the Spanish War of Independence in the Germanic World as an Instrument of Propaganda" (Presses de l'Université Aix-en-Provence, 2017). She collaborates with the CSIC in seminars and for the translation of historical texts from German. MARÍA JESÚS FERNÁNDEZ-GIL is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alcalá, holds a PhD in English Philology from the University of Salamanca (2011), and a Master's degree in Translation and Intercultural Mediation from the University of Salamanca (2011). Her research focuses on artistic representations of the Holocaust as well as the role of translation in the dissemination of this historical fact. Her publications include Translating Horror: The Intersection of Ethics, Ideology, and Power in Holocaust Remembrance (Peter Lang, 2013) and The (Est)etic Role of Literature in Holocaust Commemoration (Dykinson, 2013), as well as various articles that have appeared in national and international journals. Two of her most recent works are "Censorship 2.0 and the Holocaust: Content Control and its Impact on the Transnational Image of the Nazi Genocide" (2015) and "The Ages of Hitler: From Satan to Flesh and Blood, Including His Parodic Representation" (2016). She is a member of the research groups Reception (UAH), Fitispos (UAH), and Midel (UA). As a professional translator, she has worked in literary, technical, and administrative translation.
