The DOSSIER IUU collection is a series of monographic publications launched as an initiative of the Institute of Urban Planning (Instituto Universitario de Urbanística, hereinafter I.U.U.) at the University of Valladolid. Since its inception in 2013, the collection has established a long and successful editorial trajectory, under the former name DOSSIER CIUDADES.
The primary aim of the series is to disseminate the results of advanced, high-quality research through unrestricted open access. Each volume takes the form of a scholarly monograph devoted to a specific topic within the I.U.U.'s areas of expertise. Monographs may be authored either by a single researcher or by multiple contributors as a collectively planned work developed according to a previously agreed common framework. The series seeks to promote studies that advance knowledge through innovative approaches or critical reassessments of existing theoretical frameworks, as well as through the analysis of significant experiences and case studies. Particular emphasis is placed on multidisciplinary perspectives and on methodological and epistemological plurality.
Building on the established publication record of the collection, and with the aim of meeting the quality standards required for its formal recognition as an academic publishing series, from 2026 onwards every monograph will be subject to prior editorial supervision and approval by the I.U.U. Editorial Scientific Committee before undergoing the scholarly peer-review procedures established by Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid (University of Valladolid Press).

Brief Biographies of the Series Editors:
Juan Luis de las Rivas Sanz
Architect (1984) and PhD in Architecture (1988) from the University of Navarra, he is Full Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the School of Architecture of the University of Valladolid (UVa), where he currently serves as Dean. He previously directed both the Institute of Urban Planning (Instituto Universitario de Urbanística) and the Department of Urban Planning. He is also coordinator of the University of Valladolid's Recognised Research Group (GIR) Territorial and Urban Planning. He has been awarded four six-year research assessment periods, the latest covering 2014–2019, and one six-year knowledge transfer assessment period (2000–2012).
He has supervised 23 doctoral dissertations, coordinated the University of Valladolid's Doctoral Programme in Architecture (2016–2023), served on ANECA's doctoral evaluation committee (2019–2022), and participated in the evaluation of higher education institutions, including for the Portuguese Universities Foundation (2003) and Roma Tre University (2009). He has also acted as a national and international evaluator for the Spanish UN-Habitat Committee (2009–2011). Since 2013 he has been appointed Independent Expert to the Council for the Environment and Spatial Planning of Castile and León. He is a former member of the governing board of the Spanish Association of Urban Planning Professionals and, since 2019, a Full Member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Valladolid.
He has been a Visiting Scholar at the Polytechnic University of Milan (1990) and Arizona State University (1996), and a Visiting Professor at the Polytechnic University of Milan (2006, 2015 and 2018—the latter under the international programme Contemporary City: Descriptions and Projects), the University of Texas at Austin (2008, as Visiting Resource Professor at the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies), and Universidad Iberoamericana Puebla (Mexico). He has also collaborated with numerous academic institutions in Spain and abroad, including ESAP Porto and the Institute of Urbanism in Caracas.
He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and books, including Space as Place (1992) and Smart Territories (2004, co-authored with Alfonso Vegara; revised and republished in 2014 as Supercities. The Intelligence of Territory, with an English edition published in 2020). He edited the Spanish edition of Ian McHarg's classic Design with Nature (Gustavo Gili, 2000), authored the Atlas of Historic Ensembles of Castile and León (2009), and published Minor Landscapes: Territorial Heritage and Rural Areas—A Research Trajectory (2022). An active participant in national and international conferences, he has served on numerous scientific committees, including those of the 41st ISOCARP World Congress (2005), the 24th ISUF International Conference (2017), ISUF-H (2018 and 2020), the ITE+3R Congress (2019), and Récits de Ville–LABEX (2019), among others. In 2025, the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) published In the Mirror of Urban Landscapes: Sharing Experiences and Grounding within its YA-Booklet Project, a volume reflecting on his academic, research and professional career through conversations with the young researchers Ana Ruiz and Federico Camerin.
Through his research group, he has collaborated extensively with public administrations on urban and regional planning projects that have contributed to the introduction of new planning legislation and innovative spatial planning instruments in Castile and León, at both the regional (2006 and 2012) and metropolitan scales (Valladolid, 2000; Segovia, 2006). His work has also promoted urban regeneration, notably through the Urban Regeneration Strategy for Castile and León (2015), and the energy transition in cities, including the preparation of the Framework Document for Castile and León (2020). He has participated—most often as principal investigator or project leader—in more than 30 national and international research projects and in over 60 competitively awarded research contracts and collaborative agreements.
José Prada Trigo
He has developed an academic and research career in the fields of Human, Urban and Economic Geography, with a sustained international profile spanning Europe and Latin America. He graduated in Geography from the University of Castilla–La Mancha in 2007 and completed his postgraduate research training at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he obtained the Diploma of Advanced Studies in 2009 and earned his PhD in 2012 with the dissertation Urban Decline in Spanish Medium-Sized Cities: The Role of Local Actors in Urban Revitalisation Strategies. The thesis received the distinction of Outstanding (cum laude), was awarded the European Doctorate Mention, and received the Extraordinary Doctoral Award. From the outset of his academic career, his research has focused on urban dynamics, socio-spatial vulnerability, residential segregation and urban public policy, with particular emphasis on medium-sized cities.
He began his professional career at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), where he completed his doctoral research between 2008 and 2012 at the Institute of Economics, Geography and Demography, participating in nationally and internationally funded competitive research projects, including the COST Action TU0803. He subsequently broadened his international experience through a postdoctoral appointment in Ecuador under the Prometeo Programme and through academic collaborations with several Ecuadorian universities. In 2016, he joined the University of Concepción (Chile) as Associate Professor, where he consolidated his academic and research profile over a period of more than six years. During this time, he also held several academic leadership positions, serving as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Geography (2018–2020) and Head of the Department of Geography (2020–2022).
Since September 2022, he has been Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Geography at the University of Valladolid, following his appointment through a competitive talent recruitment programme. In this position, he combines teaching, research and academic management, delivering courses in the Bachelor's degrees in Geography and Spatial Planning and History, while actively participating in nationally and internationally funded research projects. He currently coordinates the University of Valladolid's Recognised Research Group (GIR) CITERIOR – City and Spatial Planning and serves as Academic Secretary of both the Department of Geography and the PACUNA Doctoral Programme.
His research output includes more than 75 articles published in indexed scientific journals, with numerous papers appearing in leading first- and second-quartile international journals, including Urban Studies, Population, Space and Place, Housing Studies, and Resources Policy, as well as books and book chapters published by prestigious academic publishers. He has presented more than 70 papers at national and international conferences and has undertaken research stays at leading institutions in France, Italy, Paraguay and Colombia. He is an active member of professional associations in the fields of geography and urban studies, including the Spanish Association of Geography, where he regularly contributes to its academic and scientific activities. He currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Association's Economic Geography Group. In addition, he is a regular peer reviewer for international journals in urban and social geography and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Atenea journal, which is indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR).
COMMITTEES
The ownership and governance structure of the DOSSIER IUU series has been designed to ensure editorial independence and transparency in its management. The series has two dedicated bodies within its organisational and editorial structure, both attached to the Institute of Urban Planning (I.U.U.), whose role is to safeguard the scholarly quality of its publications and their relevance to readers: an Editorial Scientific Committee, responsible for the ongoing editorial oversight of the series and appointed by the I.U.U. Council; and an Advisory Board, which serves in a consultative capacity.
Both bodies have a distinctly international composition, with a substantial majority of their members drawn from institutions other than the University of Valladolid, including universities and research centres outside Spain. Their membership also reflects the multidisciplinary nature of the I.U.U., bringing together scholars from the diverse fields of expertise represented within the Institute. In addition to their well-established academic credentials, all members have demonstrated originality, methodological rigour and intellectual diversity in their research on topics related to the I.U.U.'s areas of activity. Many have also maintained a longstanding and active involvement in the Institute's publishing initiatives.
Editorial Scientific Committee
The Editorial Scientific Committee is composed of the I.U.U. Publications Coordinator, who serves as Chair of the Committee; four members from the University of Valladolid, including the Series Editor(s); and six additional members affiliated with Spanish or international universities or research institutions and currently in active academic service. Of the Committee's members, at least one third, but in any case fewer than half, shall be regular members of the I.U.U. holding a doctoral degree.
The responsibilities of the Editorial Scientific Committee include:
— Attending and participating in the Committee's ordinary and extraordinary meetings, held either in person or online, following prior notice issued by the I.U.U. Publications Coordinator.
— Preparing reports on the preliminary acceptance of proposals submitted to the I.U.U. for publication in the DOSSIER IUU series.
— Identifying potential editorial collaborators for the DOSSIER IUU series, either as Guest Editors responsible for coordinating a specific monograph or as contributors to a monograph that has received preliminary approval.
— Preparing reports on the final approval of completed manuscripts prior to their submission to the University of Valladolid Press (Ediciones UVa) for publication as new volumes in the DOSSIER IUU series.
— Proposing members of the Advisory Board and other specialists to serve as external reviewers for manuscripts submitted to Ediciones UVa for editorial processing.
The Committee's internal procedures —including the convening of ordinary and extraordinary meetings, decision-making procedures, and the appointment or replacement of Committee members— are governed by the I.U.U. Publications Regulations, approved by the I.U.U. Council at its meeting of 3 October 2025 (available here: I.U.U. Internal Regulations).

Advisory Board
The Advisory Board is composed of scholars with well-established research careers, appointed on the basis of their international standing, disciplinary diversity, and the relevance of their expertise to the I.U.U.'s research areas. Its membership is open and may be expanded or renewed according to the editorial needs of the series. Appointments are proposed by the members of the Editorial Scientific Committee to the I.U.U. Publications Coordinator, who is responsible for notifying appointments to and departures from the Board. The Advisory Board's primary mission is to ensure the scholarly quality of the content of each monograph published in the DOSSIER IUU series and to contribute to the definition of its editorial policy and to its dissemination within the academic community.

EDITORIAL POLICY
The publishing entity sponsoring this project is Ediciones UVa (EdUVa), in close collaboration with the Institute of Urban Planning (Instituto Universitario de Urbanística, I.U.U.) of the University of Valladolid. Between 2013 and 2026, the various volumes of the DOSSIER IUU series were published by the I.U.U., in some cases in partnership with EdUVa. From 2026 onwards, the Ediciones UVa will assume full responsibility for the publication of the renamed collection, DOSSIER IUU, overseeing its editorial evaluation, production and dissemination, with the continuing scientific, financial and editorial support of the I.U.U. The ownership of the series does not interfere with editorial decision-making, thereby safeguarding the academic and scholarly independence of its authors, reviewers and editors. Copyright in the published works remains with their respective authors.
The editorial policy of the series is aligned with the I.U.U.'s research priorities in the broad fields of Urban and Regional Planning. The Editorial Scientific Committee is responsible for ensuring the development and evolution of the series in accordance with the Institute's principal research areas: Spatial and Urban Planning, Urban and Territorial Heritage, Housing and the City, Rural Development, and Urban History. The series particularly encourages research adopting multidisciplinary approaches in order to enrich both the published results and the scholarly debate surrounding the themes addressed in each monograph.
The following principles and commitments constitute the general editorial policy of the DOSSIER IUU series. They will guide the interpretation and implementation of this policy by the Editorial Scientific Committee in the exercise of its responsibilities:
- Open Science: Commitment to the Open Science principles promoted by UNESCO, contributing to making research more efficient, reliable, impactful, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of society.
- Originality: Commitment to the protection of intellectual property by ensuring that submitted works are free from plagiarism and do not infringe copyright, whether in the text or in the illustrations. The Editorial Scientific Committee and the external reviewers willl determine the significance of any similarity detected and assess any suspected cases of plagiarism or inappropriate use of artificial intelligence (AI).
- Thematic Coherence: Commitment to ensuring the scholarly relevance, presentation quality, and alignment of each monograph with the UNESCO Fields of Science and Technology represented within the I.U.U. These aspects are verified through the preliminary assessment conducted by the Editorial Scientific Committee prior to the editorial processing and scholarly evaluation undertaken by Ediciones UVa, with the aim of fostering knowledge creation and contributing to contemporary academic debate.
- Intersectionality: Commitment to publishing rigorous, unbiased and intersectional research that acknowledges the complexity and diversity of cultural, biological, economic and social contexts. The series promotes the use of inclusive, non-discriminatory language that avoids bias related to race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, beliefs, ideology or socioeconomic status.
- Scholarly Evaluation: Commitment to scientific excellence and methodological rigour through the proposal of qualified reviewers by the Editorial Scientific Committee to Ediciones UVa for the evaluation of each new monograph. All manuscripts will undergo external peer review under a double-blind process in which the identities of both authors and reviewers remain anonymous. Reviewers will be recognised experts in the relevant field.
- Editorial Quality: Commitment to maintaining high standards of editorial design and production for every monograph, in accordance with the general guidelines of the series. Authors are provided with templates and submission guidelines, while each manuscript undergoes a formal copy-editing and stylistic review process at every stage of editorial production until its final publication in print and/or digital formats.
- Publication Schedule: Commitment to publishing at least one monograph each year, allocating the necessary human and material resources in accordance with a structured editorial timetable that facilitates preliminary acceptance, double-blind peer review, typesetting, ISBN registration, and final publication.
- Dissemination: Commitment to the widest possible dissemination of each published monograph by making full use of the I.U.U.'s communication channels —including its website, blog, social media platforms and newsletter— to publicise new titles, provide complementary repository services, and distribute printed copies to institutions and research centres with an interest in the series. These dissemination activities are complemented by Ediciones UVa and the University's institutional repository (UVaDOC), ensuring unrestricted open access to the entire scholarly community, free of charge.
AUTHOR GUIDELINES AND PEER-REVIEW PROCESS
Research manuscripts submitted for consideration for publication in the DOSSIER IUU series must strictly comply with the requirements set out below. Submissions that fail to meet these requirements will be rejected without further consideration.
AUTHORSHIP
Submitted manuscripts must be original, unpublished works that meet high standards of scholarly quality and academic rigour. They must not be under consideration for publication by another publisher, journal or academic series. Conference proceedings, symposium papers, colloquium proceedings and similar publications will not be considered for publication.
For edited volumes, authorship is limited to a maximum of three authors per individual monograph or per book chapter. Wherever possible, the composition of co-authorship teams and the appointment of volume editors should reflect recognised good practices in gender equality. Editors of collective volumes are responsible for ensuring a shared thematic framework, common scientific objectives and coherent methodological approaches across all contributions. They must also provide contributors with appropriate editorial guidance in order to guarantee the overall scholarly coherence of the volume. All individuals identified as authors in the submitted manuscript must have made a substantial intellectual contribution to the work. Whenever possible, the specific contribution made by each author should be explicitly stated. Authors are encouraged to consult the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidance on authorship, particularly the document What Constitutes Authorship?, before submitting their manuscript.
All documents will be subject to an originality check and a review for the use of generative AI. In any case, please refer to the section on ‘Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)’ in Ediciones UVa’s Editorial Policy to understand the scope of AI use in the editorial process for submitted works.
PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
The proposed monograph should be approximately 150 to 250 pages in length, following the format and layout established in the templates provided to authors by the IUU Editorial Scientific Committee.
In the case of edited volumes, each chapter shall have a minimum length of approximately 5000 words. The maximum length of each chapter shall be determined by the volume editor(s). Each chapter must be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 180 words in both Spanish and English, at least five keywords, and a list of references at the end of the chapter.
Illustrations shall be prepared digitally in JPG image format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and at a size suitable to ensure legibility in the final publication. Each illustration may consist of one or more images. Where an illustration comprises multiple images, these shall be combined into a single file. Illustrations shall be numbered consecutively within each chapter and accompanied by a caption indicating the source of each image.
References shall follow the author-date citation system, using parenthetical in-text citations complemented by a reference list at the end of each chapter. In all cases, citations and references must conform to the APA Style (7th edition or later), unless superseded by subsequent revisions or specific editorial instructions. The final reference list shall include only works that are cited in the text through parenthetical references.
To facilitate the preparation and layout of each monograph, the following templates are provided:

— Edited volume: chapters written by multiple authors under the coordination of up to three volume editors. (Download: EDITED VOLUME TEMPLATE)
Manuscripts will be submitted through the online submission platform available on the Ediciones UVa website under the “Publication Proposals” section, following the submission instructions provided therein and indicating that the work is intended for publication in the DOSSIER IUU series. In the case of edited volumes, particular care should be taken to ensure that the online submission includes all information relating to the preparation and coordination guidelines followed by the contributing authors and the volume editor(s) in producing the submitted work (see the “Authorship” section above).
The IUU Editorial Scientific Committee will carry out a preliminary editorial assessment to verify the manuscript's relevance to the IUU's priority research areas; its scholarly interest, originality, and contribution to contemporary debate; its formal quality as a manuscript, including compliance with these Author Guidelines; and its strict adherence to the template provided for monographs in the DOSSIER IUU series.
Upon successful completion of this initial review, the IUU Editorial Scientific Committee shall propose to EdUVa at least two experts in the subject matter of the proposed monograph to act as peer reviewers and prepare the required evaluation reports.
SCIENTIFIC REVIEW AND PUBLICATION
The review process shall be conducted by subject specialists external to the University of Valladolid, following the double-blind peer review system. The anonymity of both authors and reviewers shall be preserved throughout the review process; gender equality will be taken into account in the selection of experts to undertake the scientific review of the proposed monograph.
In their assessment, reviewers will consider the originality and scholarly significance of the book; its depth and academic rigour; the appropriateness of its methodology; its structure and clarity of presentation; the author's or authors' command of the current state of research on the subject; the quality of the documentary sources used; and any other relevant aspect affecting its overall quality. In order to be accepted for publication, the proposal must receive two favourable reports from the external reviewers. If both reports are unfavourable, the proposal shall be rejected. If the two reports are contradictory, a third review shall be requested. If this third report is unfavourable, the proposal shall be rejected; if it is favourable, the selection process shall continue.
In order to improve the quality of its publications, Ediciones UVa shall send the reviewers' reports to the corresponding author or the volume editor of the proposed monograph so that the observations contained therein may be taken into account and any necessary or appropriate revisions may be made.
If the proposed monograph receives two favourable review reports, the corresponding author or volume editor shall, within a maximum period of sixty days after receiving the reports, submit to the editors a revised digital version of the manuscript incorporating the reviewers' recommendations, together with a detailed report specifying the revisions made. This report shall be digitally signed by the author or, in the case of an edited volume, by each of the volume editors. In light of the review reports and any revisions or amendments made by the author or volume editor, the editors shall make the final decision on publication and shall send the corresponding author or volume editor a reasoned decision. If the decision is favourable, the editorial production process shall commence. The front matter of the published book shall state that it has successfully undergone a double-blind peer review process conducted by reviewers external to the University of Valladolid.
Ediciones UVa shall endeavour to expedite, as far as possible, the review and publication process for submitted books. By submitting a proposal, the author or volume editor undertakes not to submit the book simultaneously to any other publisher. Should the author decide to withdraw the publication proposal after the review process has begun, they shall be responsible for any costs incurred.
Books that successfully complete the review process shall be published in open access in both digital and print formats. They shall also be incorporated into the University of Valladolid's institutional repository (UVaDOC), the IUU online repository, and/or other digital platforms associated with Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid.
CODE OF CONDUCT
Participation in the DOSSIER IUU series is governed by the ethical standards set out in the Good Practice Guidelines of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, which adhere to the principles established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
These Guidelines define the ethical responsibilities of authors, editorial committees, and reviewers, and their provisions are mandatory for all those involved in the editorial process of any monograph published in this series. Further details on these principles and the commitments they entail are provided in the “Editorial Policy” section of the Ediciones UVa website.
