SERIES DIRECTOR
The series is directed by María Concepción Porras Gil, Director of the Simancas University Institute of History since October 2021.
María Concepción Porras Gil has been Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Valladolid since 2001 (tel. +34 983 42 65 93; c.porras@uva.es). As a researcher, she has been a full member of the recognized research group (GIR) "Art, Power, and Society in the Early Modern Age" since 2006 (https://arteysociedad.blogs.uva.es/) and is also a member of the consolidated research unit of the Regional Government of Castilla y León (2020) bearing the same name. She has participated in seven research projects funded under national R&D programs (I+D/I+D+i). Her research focuses on two main areas: Hispanic fortifications in the Early Modern Age and noble patronage by the Velasco women, both of which converge in the study of the image as a structuring element of power.
Among her publications, the following is of special note: a study and Spanish translation of the Chronicle of Vienna, included in the volume:
From Brussels to Toledo. The Journey of Archdukes Philip and Joanna (Madrid, Ediciones Doce Calles-Fundación Carlos de Amberes-Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid-Fundación Cultural de la Nobleza, 2015).
She is also the author of various book chapters, articles, and essays, including:
-
"Fire and Water in the Light of the Chronicle of Vienna" ( Estudios del mundo clásico e Historia del Arte, 10, June 2017, pp. 69–86, DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.6035/Potestas.2017-10-4).

-
"Vanishing Art. Ephemeral Works in the Service of Festivity" in Miguel Ángel Zalama Rodríguez, María José Martínez Ruiz, and Jesús Félix Pascual Molina (coords.), El legado de las obras de arte: tapices, pinturas, esculturas... Sus viajes a través de la historia, Valladolid, Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, 2017, pp. 11–27.
-
"The Sounds of a Journey. Music in the Chronicle of Vienna" in Eva Esteve Roldán, Iain Fenlon, Francisco Rodilla León, and Nuria Torres Lobo (eds.), Sonido y espacio: Antiguas experiencias musicales ibéricas, Madrid, Alpuerto, 2019, pp. 155–184.

"Stolen Views. Espionage and Art in the Service of War" in Inmaculada Rodríguez Moya and Víctor Mínguez (eds.), Rex Bellum. Artistic Visions of War and Conquest, Gijón, Trea, 2021, pp. 133–155.
She also has a notable record in knowledge transfer. She has published two textbooks on Islamic art, curated several exhibitions and written their corresponding catalogues, and is the author of the historical novel Espejos para una corte, which narrates the construction of Louis XIV's public image through the creation of the royal mirror glass manufactory.
As a visiting professor, she has taught at the University of Monterrey (Mexico), the Università del Salento (Italy), and the Uniwersytet Śląski in Silesia (Poland), where she serves as the Institutional Erasmus Representative for the agreement signed with that university's Department of Art History.
She is a member of the editorial board of the Boletín de Arte of the University of Valladolid and the digital journal Ars & Renovatio. She is also deputy director of the Ateneo of Valladolid and director of its Art section. EDITORIAL POLICY
The book series of the Simancas University Institute of History publishes the texts of the presentations delivered by invited scholars and researchers during the Institute’s Autumn Lecture Series. This series began in 1989 and has continued without interruption, with one volume published annually. The topics covered are diverse but always approached from a historiographical perspective. The full catalogue of books published to date is available on the Institute's website: https://historiasimancas.uva.es/144-2/.
Each year, the Institute’s management team submits for approval by its Members' Council the proposed title of the lecture series and the names of the selected speakers. The cycle is held each November. Afterwards, authors submit their texts for the volume, following the Institute's editorial guidelines. The manuscript is first reviewed by the Editorial Scientific Committee. Then, through the University of Valladolid Press (EdUVa), it is sent to external reviewers. Once their reports are received, EdUVa forwards them to the Institute so that the authors can incorporate the suggested revisions. This evaluation process is double-blind, involving both authors and the Institute.
CODE OF ETHICAL CONDUCT
