The Olmedo Clásico collection was established in 2007 in close association with the Olmedo Classical Theatre Festival, which has been held annually since 2006 in Olmedo, the "Town of the Knight." The festival encompasses a wide range of activities related to classical theatre: performances, exhibitions, acting workshops, and academic symposia. This book series emerged from the same commitment to promoting classical theatre and aims to disseminate the academic content developed in connection with the festival. The Festival is chiefly promoted by the Olmedo Town Council, while Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid is responsible for regularly publishing the annual volumes of the Olmedo Clásico series. The collection is directed by Germán Vega García-Luengos, Professor of Spanish Literature at the University of Valladolid.

The Olmedo Clásico collection offers rigorous studies on authors, works, and themes of the Spanish Golden Age, produced by leading specialists in the field. Its intended readership extends beyond specialists to include all readers interested in one of the most significant chapters in Western literary and cultural history. The enduring relevance of classical theatre is evident in the programming of major theatres and the continued existence of festivals such as those in Almagro, Almería, Cáceres, Olite, and Olmedo itself. The Olmedo Festival enjoys considerable prestige, having received the "Provincia de Valladolid" Award in 2016 from the Provincial Council of Valladolid, recognizing it as “the most important reference point in Castilla y León for the promotion of Spanish classical theatre.” The award acknowledged not only the festival’s theatrical productions but also its contributions to research and broader cultural enrichment. Within this framework, the Olmedo Clásico series plays a key role in disseminating scholarship on classical theatre.

All books in the series undergo an anonymous peer-review process conducted by external experts unaffiliated with the University of Valladolid, ensuring the scholarly quality of each volume. The editorial presentation matches the intellectual value of the content, featuring hardcover binding, high-quality paper, and double-column formatting.

SERIES DIRECTOR

Born in León, Germán Vega García-Luengos is Professor of Spanish Literature at the University of Valladolid. His research spans medieval and early modern literature, with a particular focus on classical theatre. He has authored over 150 studies on topics including text recovery, reception, and historical-literary contexts. He is known for uncovering new critical testimonies, including several previously unknown comedies by Calderón, Alarcón, Vélez, Mira, and Rojas. From the beginning of his career, he has devoted particular attention to problems of attribution, employing bibliographical, philological, and, more recently, stylometric tools. He founded the Olmedo Clásico Festival in 2006 and has co-directed its fourteen editions. He is the director of the major digital platform Teatro Clásico Español (TCE) hosted by the Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes, as well as other online resources dedicated to playwrights and theatrical archives. He has led numerous research projects, conferences, and doctoral programs. He coordinates two book series on the Spanish Golden Age: Fastiginia and Olmedo Clásico. He is Honorary President of AITENSO and serves on the editorial boards of several academic publishers and journals.
