Editorial criteria for the publication of manuscripts

The process for submitting and evaluating book proposals is explained in detail in the section Publication Proposals, which provides guidance for authors on how to submit their proposals through the Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid website, as well as how to register and navigate the evaluation process (which is also summarized below).

Evaluation process: All submitted manuscripts will undergo an initial review to assess compliance with Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid’s Guidelines for Manuscript Preparation and Book Format Requirements. This review will consider factors such as the formal presentation of the book, structural coherence, clarity and correctness of language, appropriate bibliographic support, proper and consistent citation style, and the originality and novelty of the content, ensuring it represents a genuine contribution to its field of knowledge. Manuscripts may be rejected during this initial review if they fail to meet these standards. In addition, all submissions will be checked using plagiarism detection software. Manuscripts that fail to comply with the ethical standards outlined in the Good Practice Guidelines of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid (available at the end of this page) will not be accepted for publication.

If revisions or adjustments are required following this initial review, the author will be notified accordingly. Once these revisions have been made, the author must submit a corrected digital version of the manuscript (Word format) to Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid.

University instructional manuals, institutional publications, and works intended for the dissemination of scientific and cultural knowledge may be approved for publication after passing this initial review. Research books (whether included in a specific series or not) will undergo a second evaluation process to assess the quality of their content. This evaluation is conducted by subject specialists external to the University of Valladolid through a double-blind peer review, ensuring that authors do not know the identity of the reviewers, nor do the reviewers know the identity of the authors. Authors must therefore take care to eliminate any identifying information from their manuscripts.

In this second review process, reviewers will assess the originality and scientific interest of the work, its depth and rigor, the soundness of its methodology, its structure and clarity, the author’s command of the current state of the field, the adequacy of bibliographic references, and any other aspects relevant to scholarly quality. Two positive reports are required for the manuscript to proceed to publication. If two negative reports are received, the publication will be declined. In the case of one positive and one negative report, a third review will be commissioned: if the third report is negative, the book will not be published; if it is positive, the selection process will continue.

To further enhance publication quality, Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid will share reviewer reports with the authors, who are expected to consider the reviewers’ comments and make any necessary revisions or adjustments.

If a manuscript receives two positive reports, the author must submit a revised digital version of the manuscript (Word format), reflecting the suggested revisions, along with a report detailing the changes made. Based on this report and the revised manuscript, Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid will make a final decision regarding publication and will communicate this decision to the author with a reasoned report. If approved, the editorial process will commence. The published book will include a statement indicating that it underwent external double-blind peer review.

Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid will determine the technical aspects of publication (paper, print run, format, cover design, etc.). All communication with the printer will be conducted by the author through Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid in its role as publisher. For printed books, Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid will compensate authors with 10% of the print run, in lieu of royalties.

Books that form part of a series will also adhere to the specific editorial policies of that series, publicly available in the Book Series section of the publisher’s website.

Conditions for authors regarding the self-archiving of research monographs:

Research books that successfully pass the evaluation process described above, in accordance with the University of Valladolid’s institutional policy on open access to scholarly and academic output, will be published immediately in open access, freely and without charge, on the Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid website and on any related digital platforms. A print edition may also be made available.

Following open-access publication, authors may deposit their work in institutional or subject-based open-access repositories, provided that the original publication by Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid is acknowledged.

Code of Conduct and Editorial Best Practices

The publisher’s ethical standards are defined in the Good Practice Guidelines of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, which apply to all parties involved in the creation, review, and publication of books —authors, the EdUVa Editorial Committee, and peer reviewers. All participants are expected to observe the guidelines relevant to their role in the publishing process.
