Curriculum Vitae of Nieves Mendizábal de la Cruz:
She holds degrees in Hispanic Philology (1990) and German Philology (1992), as well as a PhD in Hispanic Philology (Extraordinary Doctorate Award) from the University of Valladolid. She is currently Associate Professor in General Linguistics in the Department of Spanish Language at the Faculty of Arts, University of Valladolid.
She is part of several research teams (Applied Linguistics for Spanish as a Foreign Language, Spanish Language, Literature and Language Disorders, and Speech Therapy) and is a member of the recognised research group "European Languages: Teaching/Learning, Intercultural Pragmatics and Linguistic Identity."
Her doctoral thesis, Origen y evolución de las proposiciones causales en el español medieval (1995), initiated a research path in diachronic linguistics, resulting in several publications on the subject. Her most representative works include: "Las oraciones causales en la prensa actual" (Epos, 1995); "Clasificación semántico-funcional de los verbos regentes de proposiciones causales en el español de los siglos X al XV" (Tonos Digital, 2013); and "Valores semánticos de la preposición en: el caso del español de México en un corpus de entrevistas orales" (Analecta, 2012).
Her research also extends to Sociolinguistics ("Aspectos sociolingüísticos del habla de Valladolid", 1994), Applied Linguistics to language acquisition ("Errores espontáneos en la producción oral", Artifara, 2005; "El Léxico de referencia espacial", Biblioteca Nueva, 2014), and the teaching of Spanish as a second language (various works in Everest, Tonos Digital, and MarcoELE). She has also worked in semiotics and film studies (Especulum).
Her most recent research focuses on language pathologies in patients with psychotic disorders (Signos, Chile, 2019). She is part of the LEPSI group (Language and Psychosis, University of Chile), with several published articles on schizophrenia, reality judgment, and verbal fluency (Lengua y Lingüística, 2017; Signos, 2019).
She has taught Spanish for Foreigners at the University of Valladolid and has been invited to teach at national (Comillas, 2005; Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2016; Universidad de León, 2017) and international institutions (France, Italy, Germany, the UK, Austria, Latvia), including research visits under Erasmus+ (Innsbruck, St. Andrews, Riga, Verona, Palermo, Clermont-Ferrand).
She has participated in numerous national and international conferences (Leipzig, 2009; Vila Real, 2009; Cagliari, 2015; Lisbon, 2017; Venice, 2016; Zurich, 2017).
At the University of Valladolid, she has taught courses in General Linguistics, Clinical Linguistics, Pragmatics, Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Discourse Analysis in undergraduate studies, as well as in the Master's programmes in Advanced Philological Studies and Spanish as a Foreign Language: Teaching and Research.
She has supervised four doctoral theses on pragmatic acquisition, language disorders, and teaching/learning of Spanish as a foreign language. She has participated in projects on Applied Linguistics to ELE, Lexicography, Diachrony, and Sign Language.
She served as Academic Director of the Language Centre (2015–2018) and of the Spanish courses for foreigners (2015–2019). She currently coordinates the Master’s Degree in Spanish as a Foreign Language: Teaching and Research.
She has published several books and manuals for teaching Spanish as a foreign language (Hablamos, 2010; Método Everest, 2000), and organised international conferences such as AESLA (2019) and the General Linguistics Conference (2010).
She has edited collective volumes (University of Valladolid, 2009; University of Valencia, 2019) and is on the scientific board of several journals, serving as peer reviewer.
Curriculum Vitae of Cristina Vela Delfa:
She earned a degree in General Linguistics (1999) from the Complutense University of Madrid (Extraordinary Award and National Award) and a PhD from the same university (Extraordinary Award and European Doctorate Mention). She is currently Senior Lecturer in Spanish Language at the University of Valladolid.
She was an F.P.U. fellow in the Lalingap research group and has taken part in numerous European projects. In 2007, she began working at the Antonio de Nebrija University as Coordinator of the Master's in Applied Linguistics for Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language, maintaining close ties to research in Applied Linguistics and ELE ever since.
She has given teacher training workshops at Cervantes Institute centres (Milan, Naples) and collaborates with various publishers in the ELE field, including keynote talks at the Encuentro Práctico (Difusión, Barcelona, 2007) and conferences in France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Portugal. She has worked with Edinumen in its international teacher training programmes and taught at Spanish universities such as Vigo and Pablo de Olavide.
She has developed research stays at international institutions such as Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (France), New York University (USA), and the Universidad Nacional del Sur (Argentina). Under Erasmus+, she has taught in Riga, Verona, Clermont-Ferrand, and Paris.
She has participated in numerous national and international research projects. Highlights include: Formation de formateurs à l’intercompréhension en langes romanes and MIRIADI – Mutualisation et Innovation pour un Réseau de l'Intercompréhension à Distance. Currently, she is part of the IMCORDIS project, focused on politeness, image management, and historical and discursive perspectives on communication.
Her main research lines are the study of intercomprehension in Romance languages and digital interaction analysis, approached both theoretically and practically.
She has presented research in various international forums (Santiago de Chile, Alcalá de Henares, Paris, Santa Fe, etc.) and is the author of over 14 SCOPUS-indexed articles and 8 in Web of Science, with over 300 citations and an H-index of 9.
She has taught ELE at the University of Valladolid and Antonio de Nebrija University, focusing on Pragmatics applied to ELE across various Master's programmes.
She is on the editorial board of several journals, reviewer of multiple applied linguistics articles, Reviews Editor for Infoling, and Director of REDD (Revista de Estudios del Discurso Digital). She edited the monograph "El análisis del discurso digital en las ciencias sociales" in Aposta (2016) and is currently preparing a volume on address forms for Signos.
She is Vice President of GLAUX-AIC (Communication Research Association) and President of RECOD (Network for the Study of Digital Communication).

EDITORIAL POLICY
The demographic breadth of Spanish makes it a key economic asset in what are known as "language industries," primarily driven by language services, Spanish language instruction, and the publishing sector for Spanish teaching materials. According to the Instituto Cervantes Yearbook, over 500 million people speak Spanish as a native language, and the global pool of potential Spanish users—including native speakers, those with limited proficiency, and foreign language learners—surpasses 572 million.
The Instituto Cervantes report El español: una lengua viva (2019) underscores the language’s growing influence in the media, international trade, cultural industries, publishing, digital communications, and social media use. In the scientific realm, Spanish-language journals indexed in the ISSN database represent 5% of the total, with a 130% increase in absolute terms in recent years.
Spanish is a global cultural language, ranked fourth among institutional languages of the European Union and third in the UN system. It is characterized by a uniformly accepted standard and wide geographic distribution, being spoken officially in 21 countries. Its future global presence is highly promising.
These factors underscore the relevance and necessity of developing training resources, publications, and book series devoted to Spanish as a foreign language, responding to the social demand for multiculturalism and multilingualism.
The launch of the official Master’s in Spanish as a Foreign Language: Teaching and Research at the University of Valladolid in 2019–2020 highlighted the need for a dedicated book series. Master’s students consistently produce high-quality dissertations, providing valuable contributions to the field. In a meeting held on 22 September 2020, the programme committee proposed evaluating and publishing the most outstanding dissertations in collaboration with Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid. While the collection prioritizes excellent MA work, it is also open to research by experienced scholars working in applied linguistics and Spanish as a second or foreign language.
Collection Objectives:
— Promote the dissemination of research by both early-career and established scholars in ELE
— Encourage studies in Applied Linguistics related to Spanish as a second or foreign language
— Publish research on ELE resources, methodologies, and applied studies
At least one book will be published each year.
CODE OF ETHICAL CONDUCT
This series adheres to the Guide to Good Practices of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, which subscribes to the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). The guide defines ethical conduct for authors, editorial committees, and peer reviewers. All parties are expected to comply with these standards.
AUTHOR GUIDELINES
The series follows the editorial criteria of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, available in the “Publication proposals” section of its website.
Manuscripts, not exceeding 700,000 to 800,000 characters (including spaces), will first be assessed by the series editors and selected members of the editorial committee. If aligned with the editorial focus and guidelines, manuscripts will undergo double-blind peer review. Only manuscripts receiving positive evaluations will be accepted. Authors will be notified of decisions with justification.
Submission guidelines are available on the publisher’s website (Guidelines for Manuscript Preparation). Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be returned without review.
A downloadable book format template is also provided (Book Format Template). If a different format is required, this must be specified in the submission form.
