VERTERE, 23 (2021). A FRIAR OF MASS AND POT ON THE WAY OF ST. JAMES

We present in a Spanish version, accompanied by an edition of the original Italian, the account of the journey to Santiago de Compostela undertaken in 1583 by the Augustinian friar Cristóbal Monte Maggio of Pesaro, a text until now almost unknown and critically unexplored. With the publication of this work, we aim to add another piece to the rich mosaic of Jacobean literature, whose founding text is Book V of the "Codex Calixtinus" by Aymeric Picaud (12th century), known as the "Pilgrim's Guide." We also aspire to provide documentation that enriches the perfection of our cultural past, since, as Peter Burke maintains, travel accounts are among the most eloquent sources for cultural history. Monte Maggio offers some details not included in other Jacobean texts and, furthermore, conveys a perception of the "holy journey" that corresponds to that of a pilgrim belonging to the lower clergy, endowed with less than exquisite culture. Thus, the narrative is not only interesting in itself for understanding another way of experiencing the spirit of the Compostela pilgrimage, but is also important for Italian pilgrimage production on the subject of St. James from the perspective of imageology. From a translation perspective, it reveals the problems presented by the translation of a diachronically marked text, which are resolved by bringing into play a series of declarative (knowledge), procedural (know-how), and aptitude (know-how to adapt) knowledge. The dynamic integration of these competencies and skills is what allows the translator to carry out their work with confidence and transform the material of the prototext (TO) into a final product that functions in the space and time of the metatext (MT), respecting the social, cultural, and linguistic factors that comprise it. Dianella Gambini is Professor of Spanish Language and Translation at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia (Italy). She has taught at the Università degli Studi di Perugia and at the Universities of Santiago de Compostela and Complutense of Madrid. Her research interests focus primarily on translation studies and the literature of Romanticism and Modernism. She has also been interested in the literature of the Golden Age, especially the work of Vélez de Guevara and Cervantes. Since the beginning of her academic career, she has focused on the Galician cultural reality, especially the literature of the Compostela odepórica (the Galician Odeporica) and the work of Valle-Inclán, which she has translated into Italian (Femeninas, Epitalamio).
