EXPRESSIONS OF POWER IN THE MIDDLE AGES. TRIBUTE TO PROFESSOR JUAN ANTONIO BONACHÍA HERNANDO
Keywords:

We present a tribute book divided into four main sections, which reflect the lines of research and teaching of Juan Antonio Bonachía Hernando. These sections include the results of cutting-edge and innovative research, reflections and reinterpretations of classic themes, contributions from established researchers alongside those of young people just starting out in this field. Bonachía earned the affection of his colleagues and students, and this is reflected in this collection of authors and works compiled to honor his memory.
Bonachía joined the Department of Medieval History in the mid-1970s after winning a research grant that would later produce his magnificent thesis on the council of Burgos in the Late Middle Ages. From the outset, he enthusiastically joined this exciting collective project promoted by Julio Valdeón. It was, of course, a turbulent time of social change and political upheaval, but also one filled with dreams and desires to transform the stagnant Francoist University into a center of knowledge. In this context, he grew as a teacher and researcher, and, of course, as a person as well. His passion for his classes, which he meticulously prepared, always revising and expanding his notes with constant additions written in the margins, would never abandon him, nor would his interest in history, which he managed to transmit to his students. His academic dedication, far from diminishing over the years, led him to take on various management positions: he served as Director of the Department of Medieval History, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, and, for eight years, Secretary General of the University of Valladolid. He also participated in various doctoral and master's programs at the Faculty and at the Simancas University Institute of History. And with his characteristic tenacity, he also promoted a joint Master's degree program between the four public universities of Castile and León and the CSIC History Institute, entitled Medieval History of Castile and León, which he maintained against all odds for three academic years. He also actively contributed to the emergence and consolidation of Edad Media. Revista de Historia (The Middle Ages: A Journal of History), of which he served first as Secretary and then as Director from 2007 to 2016. He was also a member of the Spanish Society of Medieval Studies and a founding member of the Arca Comunis network, where he was part of its management team.
