EDITORIAL POLICY
1. Subject Matter and Scope of the Collection
The “Simón Ruiz Chair” collection is a book series published by Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid (EdUVA). Established in 2012 through an agreement between the Fundación Museo de las Ferias de Medina del Campo and the University of Valladolid, its primary objective is to promote, disseminate, and transfer knowledge regarding the History of Trade and Finance.
The chronological scope of the collection focuses primarily on the 15th to 17th centuries, with special emphasis on the international significance of the Castilian fairs and the figure of Simón Ruiz. Nevertheless, the collection is open to cross-disciplinary studies on international economic history, welcoming contributions from both established researchers and early-career scholars, whether domestic or international. The collection maintains a commitment to regularity, aiming to publish at least one volume annually.
2. Openness to Manuscript Submissions
The “Simón Ruiz Chair” collection is an open series available to the academic and scientific community. Authors from any national or international institution are invited to submit original monograph proposals that align with the collection’s thematic lines. Proposals must be submitted through the official channels of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, following the instructions provided in the “Publication proposals” section of the publisher’s website.
3. Editorial Process for Manuscripts
The workflow from the receipt of a manuscript to its final publication consists of the following phases:
- Reception and registration: Entry of the manuscript into the EdUVA platform.
- Initial editorial review: Preliminary evaluation by the Collection Director and the Scientific Committee.
- External evaluation: Double-blind peer review process.
- Verdict: Notification to the author (acceptance, acceptance with modifications, or rejection).
- Editorial production: Copyediting, typesetting, DOI and ISBN assignment, and print/digital publication.
4. Editorial Criteria for Evaluation (Initial Review)
Prior to the external scientific evaluation, all manuscripts undergo an initial review by the Collection’s Scientific Committee based on the following criteria:
- Thematic relevance: The content must align with the objectives of the History of Trade, Finance, or the study of the Castilian Fairs.
- Originality, novelty, and relevance: The work must contribute unpublished knowledge or a significant historiographical review representing an advancement in the field.
- Formal quality: Strict compliance with EdUVA’s citation and style guidelines.
- Structure and rigor: Methodological consistency, appropriate use of primary sources, and updated bibliography.
5. Content Quality Evaluation System
The collection ensures the scientific excellence of its publications through a double-blind peer review system:
- Selection of evaluators: The Scientific Committee identifies and proposes specialists of recognized prestige in the subject matter. These evaluators are always external to the University of Valladolid and the author’s home institution.
- Evaluation management: Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid acts as an intermediary to guarantee the anonymity of both authors and evaluators. The publisher formally requests technical reports and ensures the impartiality of the process.
- Reviewer reports: Evaluators analyze the scientific rigor, methodology, and relevance of the work. In the event of a clear discrepancy between the two reports, a third evaluation will be sought.
- Author’s report: The author will address the suggestions made in the reviewers' reports and submit a revised copy of the book to EdUVA, along with a report detailing the changes made in response to the suggestions.
- Final decision and communication: Based on the author’s report and the revised manuscript, a final and reasoned decision regarding publication will be made and communicated to the author.
- Transparency: This process is governed by the general evaluation policy of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, available in the “Editorial Policy” section of its institutional website.
6. Copyright Assignment and Open Access Policy
Copyright Assignment: Publication in this collection requires the signature of a publishing contract in which the author assigns the exploitation rights (reproduction, distribution, and public communication) of the printed work to the University of Valladolid. This assignment is worldwide in scope and for a duration stipulated in the contract in accordance with current Intellectual Property Law.
Self-archiving and Open Access: Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid and the Simón Ruiz Chair promote the open dissemination of knowledge. Books in this collection are published in open access on the EdUVA platform and in the University of Valladolid’s Document Repository from the moment of their print edition. Authors may deposit a copy of their work in institutional or thematic repositories (self-archiving) under the following conditions:
- Deposit of the published version (Publisher's PDF) is permitted upon official publication.
- The original source of publication and the link to the University of Valladolid Press website must always be cited.
AUTHOR GUIDELINES
Authors interested in submitting a publication proposal for the “Simón Ruiz Chair” collection must follow the electronic manuscript submission procedure established by Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid (EdUVA), which is detailed in the “Publication proposals" section of its website.
It is an essential requirement that, at the time of submission, authors explicitly state that the work is proposed for inclusion specifically in the “Simón Ruiz Chair” collection. To do so, at the start of the online submission process, the corresponding box for this collection must be selected from the “Series” dropdown menu. This may also be indicated in the “Cover Note to Editor” section.
Manuscripts must be original and unpublished, adhere to the publisher's style and citation guidelines, and be accompanied by an abstract and the curriculum vitae of the author(s). Likewise, all submissions must comply with the requirements set by Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid in the “Publication proposals” section of its website, with the exception of the bibliographic citation format, which must follow the guidelines provided below in the section “Manuscritp presentation guidelines > Guidelines for referencies and notes.”
Once the proposal has been received, the review and evaluation process described in the collection’s editorial policy will begin.
