COMMITTEES

The Vertere monographs, conceived as supplements to the journal Hermeneus, share the same structure of direction, secretariat, editorial board, and scientific committee as the rest of the publications under the Hermeneus Project (Hermeneus journal and the Disbabelia collection of unknown translations), listed below.

As for the Vertere Scientific Committee, it is distinguished by a wide majority of members external to the University of Valladolid, drawn from universities across Spain and higher education institutions on all continents. Beyond its international composition and the diversity of languages, perspectives, and approaches to translation and interpreting it encompasses, the committee has consistently demonstrated strong involvement and active engagement with the publications of the Hermeneus Project.

Its main functions include:

— Ongoing advisory support and continuous evaluation of publications through alerts, suggestions, or commentary;

— Review of works submitted to the editorial board of the series;

— Proposal of expert reviewers external to the scientific committee;

— Collaboration in the editorial process of the published volumes;

— Participation in physical or virtual meetings of the editorial board.

Curriculum Summary
Juan Miguel Zarandona Fernández (juanmiguel.zarandona@uva.es) began his academic career at the University of Valladolid in the 1988–1989 academic year in the Department of English within the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the University College of Soria, where he worked as a lecturer in English Philology. He soon began doctoral studies in the PhD Program in Translation in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Valladolid (1989–1992). He had previously completed his undergraduate studies in Hispanic Philology in 1984 and in English Philology in 1987 at the same university. Later, he obtained a degree in Literary Theory in 2009. In this way, he progressively specialized, first in research and then in teaching, in Translation Studies. His first significant contribution in the field was his 1992 undergraduate dissertation, Introducción a los nombres y adjetivos particulativos ingleses. Análisis de sus posibilidades de traducción al español, with which he obtained his research proficiency on 10 March 1993.

He later transferred his academic record to the University of Zaragoza, enrolling in the PhD program Texts and Pragmatic Perspectives in the Department of English and German Philology, where he defended his doctoral dissertation on 25 May 2001. The dissertation, which combined the fields of Comparative Literature and Literary Translation and Reception, was entitled Alfred Lord Tennyson y la literatura artúrica española de los siglos xix y xx: traducción, manipulación e intertextualidad, and was awarded the distinction of sobresaliente cum laude by unanimous decision. His specialization in translation was further strengthened by postgraduate studies in the Department of Linguistics (Translation Studies) at the University of South Africa (UNISA), where he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Translation in 2000.

Regarding his employment at the University of Valladolid, over the years he held various teaching contracts—as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor—depending on the legislation in force at each time. He began at the University College of Soria and, from 1995 onwards, at the newly founded Faculty of Translation and Interpreting in Soria. His position became permanent on 13 September 2006 when he was unanimously appointed by the selection committee as Profesor Contratado Doctor Fijo (tenured full-time Senior Lecturer) in the area of Translation and Interpreting, assigned to the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of Soria. Furthermore, since 2002 he has served as a tutor-professor at the Soria branch of the UNED, teaching English Literature I and II in the degree program in English Philology, after obtaining the required Venia docendi.

In terms of teaching experience, by 31 December 2022 he had completed thirty-five academic years of university teaching in courses pertaining to English Philology and Translation and Interpreting. He taught at the University College of Soria from 1988–1989 to 1995–1996, and since then at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of Soria. Since the 2002–2003 academic year, he has taught PhD-level courses annually in both doctoral programs in Translation at the University of Valladolid: Translation and Intercultural Communication (Faculty of Translation and Interpreting) and Translation and Interpreting (Faculty of Philosophy and Letters). In addition, since 2007–2008, he has taught in the official Master's program Professional and Institutional Translation at the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of Soria.

As part of the Erasmus-Socrates program, he has lectured at numerous European universities with translation and interpreting programs: University of Surrey, United Kingdom (2002 and 2005); Libera Università degli Studi San Pio V, Rome (2004); Dublin Institute of Technology – School of Languages (2005); University of Edinburgh (2007); Lessius Hogeschool Antwerpen, Belgium (2007); Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland (2008); Charles University, Prague (2009); Fatih University, Istanbul, Turkey (2012); University of Milan (2012); Swansea University, Wales, UK (2014); and Cardiff University, Wales, UK (2016).

As a translator, in addition to his teaching and research activities, he has translated several books, a number of medical research articles into English, a substantial collection of poems and stories, and other professional translation projects. However, his most significant contributions lie in his research, with over 300 publications including journal articles, book chapters, introductions, reviews, monographs (as author and editor), and involvement in national and international scholarly journals. He is the director of the Hermeneus Project and its three publications: Hermeneus (with prestigious national and international recognitions), Vertere, and Disbabelia. His main line of research has focused on literary, cultural, and historical studies in translation, particularly in areas such as African, Arthurian, and utopian literature and culture. He founded the recognized research group TRADHUC (Humanistic and Cultural Translation) at the University of Valladolid, which he currently coordinates.

Conferences have been another central aspect of his scholarly work. He has organized and participated in numerous colloquia, seminars, and lecture series, and attended hundreds of national and international academic events on all continents, always presenting papers or talks. He has also taken part in multiple funded research projects, both at the national and regional levels. Other notable achievements include supervising doctoral dissertations and master's theses, participating in recognized research groups (GIR) at the University of Valladolid, undertaking research stays abroad, delivering invited lectures and seminars, and active membership in numerous scholarly associations.

He has supervised four PhD dissertations in various doctoral programs at the University of Valladolid, along with numerous undergraduate (TFG) and master’s theses (TFM). He has also been a member of more than ten research projects funded by various Spanish ministries.

In terms of academic administration, he has served as Secretary and Vice Dean for Academic Planning of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of Soria. For over twenty years, he has been a member of the advisory board of the University of Valladolid’s Publications Service (Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid). He has also supervised numerous student internships from the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, among other academic service activities.

Finally, he has been awarded three official sexenios de investigación (six-year research periods), the most recent of which is active, as a tenured faculty member in the field of Translation and Interpreting. In January 2023, he applied for a fourth.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Hermeneus, a research journal in Translation and Interpreting, publishes—alongside its regular issues of articles, reviews, and short translations—an annual supplementary volume under the general title Vertere Monographs in Translation and Interpreting.

The institution sponsoring this project is Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid (EdUVa), in collaboration with the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of Soria, University of Valladolid. Until 2019, the volumes in the collection were jointly managed by Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid (responsible for evaluation) and the Provincial Council of Soria (responsible for publication). As of 2020, Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid has assumed full management of the collection, overseeing both its evaluation and publication.

The research areas correspond to those listed in the publication guidelines of Hermeneus journal—namely, all topics within the fields of translation, interpreting, and related linguistic, documentary, literary, and humanistic disciplines. In order to preserve the coherence of the series, this rule is to be followed strictly.

The editorial policy and publication plan of the collection are governed by the following ten-point code, which encapsulates its core principles and commitments:

1) Regularity of the series, with at least one volume published annually, except for possible special issues.

2) Openness to all authors, without restriction, except for the relevance and quality of their research proposals.

3) Consistency across all individual volumes in the series, centred on the fields of translation, interpreting, and related disciplines.

4) Anonymous peer review of all submissions, conducted by the experts deemed most suitable by the Vertere editorial team.

5) Maximum attention to the editing, formatting, and typographic presentation of the volumes.

6) Dedicated effort toward enhancing the academic reputation and prestige of the series as a whole and of each volume individually.

7) Active commitment to the effective distribution and dissemination of the collection.

8) Unwavering dedication to the advancement of human knowledge, the fundamental goal of Vertere.

9) Endeavour to ensure that the series stands the test of time and remains a vehicle of expression for future generations.

10) Respect for all of the above points.

GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS AND EVALUATION PROCESS

Authors must be specialists in the thematic areas covered by the series: translation, interpreting, and related fields within linguistics, documentation, literature, and the broader humanities.

To be considered for publication in this series, the following documentation must be submitted to the editorial team of Hermeneus and the Vertere Monographs:

— A dated cover letter of submission;
— A brief curriculum vitae including full contact details of the author(s);
— A concise description of the completed work proposed for publication, or of the intended project;
— The complete work, if submitting a final version (in digital format);
— The source text, for purposes of evaluating the proposed translation.

Manuscripts should be no shorter than one hundred double-spaced pages and should not exceed two hundred. The submission guidelines and book formatting specifications are available on the “Submissions and Evaluation” page of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid. Should any of these requirements not be feasible, authors are encouraged to contact the editorial team directly to discuss their particular case and, if possible, to find a mutually agreeable solution.

The evaluation of the books will be carried out in accordance with the general assessment guidelines established by Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, which can be consulted on the publisher’s “Submission and Evaluation” webpage. This page also outlines the formatting and editorial standards to which all books must conform.

All submitted proposals will first undergo a preliminary selection process to ensure that the manuscripts adhere to the series’ editorial policy and thematic scope, as well as to assess their originality, relevance, and scholarly currency. During this stage, authors may be requested to make necessary revisions to their texts. Proposals that pass this initial review will proceed to a second stage, consisting of an anonymous evaluation of the content’s scholarly quality. Anonymity will be strictly upheld throughout this stage via a double-blind peer review system.

After a minimum evaluation period of approximately three months, authors will receive a written and well-founded editorial decision, which may take the form of full acceptance, conditional acceptance (requiring further revisions), or rejection. The final decision will be based on the reports provided by at least two external reviewers not affiliated with the University of Valladolid.

The preferred languages for publication are Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese—core working languages of the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting in Soria. However, manuscripts written in other languages will also be considered, provided their object of study is translation or interpreting into or from Spanish or other Peninsular languages.

All submissions must be unpublished works and may not be simultaneously submitted for publication to any other institution, organization, or publisher.

This series is open to all authors who meet the outlined requirements, with no restrictions or limitations regarding access.

Books that successfully complete the evaluation process will be published initially in print. After a one-year embargo period for sales purposes, they will also be published in digital format through the University of Valladolid's institutional repository and/or other digital platforms associated with Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid. During the embargo period, authors will transfer national and international exploitation rights to Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid. Once the embargo ends and the book is uploaded to the University of Valladolid’s institutional repository, authors may also make it available on open-access institutional or thematic repositories, provided they acknowledge that the book was originally published by Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid.

To ensure the internal consistency of this publication project, any additional editorial requirements set forth by the journal Hermeneus will also apply to the Vertere Monographs as complementary standards.

CODE OF ETHICAL CONDUCT

This book series adheres to the Code of Ethics outlined in the Good Practice Guidelines of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid, which subscribes to the principles established by the Committee on Publications Ethics (COPE). The Good Practice Guidelines of Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid define the ethical standards to be followed by authors, editorial boards, and reviewers. All parties involved are therefore asked to carefully observe the sections of the guidelines relevant to their roles.
